Tutorial: Bandana

Bandanas are always on trend! They’re fun and stylish while staying casual, giving a gypsy or boho look.

Different from the traditional western bandana style we have all probably worn at some point in our lives, this project will enable you to use your tribal or ethnic cloths to make unique, innovative bandanas!

They are so simple to make, yet very few people take advantage of this easy DIY sewing project.

In this tutorial I’m using indigo mud cloth fabric coming directly from Mali, Africa.

Step 1. Gather your material

• Indigo mud cloth cotton fabric (or any tribal cotton textile you like), at least 22 x 22 inches
• Thread
• Pins
• Scissors
• Sewing machine

Step 2. Cut the shape

Cut your fabric into a square of 22 x 22 inches. This is a standard sized napkin, but if you want larger or smaller napkins you can play around with the size.

Step 3. Sew the edges

There are two ways to go about this step:

1. If you have a serger machine, just serge all 4 edges with the color you like, either a tonal or contrast color.
2. If you have a sewing machine, pin the edges ¼” from the border. Cut a triangle out from each corner following the dimensions in the photos below, then sew all 4 sides with the sewing machine.
